The News Industry's Dirty Little Secret: We're All Making It Up As We Go

Look, I'm Gonna Say It
I've been in this game for 22 years. That's right, 22. I started as a wet-behind-the-ears intern at the Austin Chronicle back in 1999. And let me tell you, the news industry has changed more than I ever thought possible. And not always for the better.
I remember sitting in a conference room with my editor, let's call him Marcus, and he told me, "Karen, you gotta understand, news isn't about facts anymore. It's about engagement. It's about clicks." I was shocked. I mean, I came from J-school where they drilled into us that facts are sacred. But Marcus? He was just getting started.
And honestly, I get it. The internet changed everything. Back in the day, we had time. We had space. Now? Now we're all just trying to keep up. It's exhausting.
But Here's the Thing
We're not alone. I talked to a colleague named Dave last Tuesday over coffee at the place on 5th. He's been at the New York Times for 15 years. And he said, "Karen, it's worse than you think." He told me about how they have daily meetings now to "determing" what's trending. What's gonna get the most engagement. And it's not always about the news. Sometimes it's about whatever celebrity had a meltdown on Twitter last night.
I asked him, "But what about the news? The real news?" He just shook his head. "Karen, that's what we're all trying to figure out."
Which... yeah. Fair enough.
And Don't Even Get Me Started on Social Media
I mean, I love Twitter. I do. It's great for keeping up with what's happening. But it's also a nightmare. Because now, the news cycle isn't 24 hours. It's 214 seconds. That's how long it takes for a tweet to go viral. And then it's gone. And we're on to the next thing.
I remember last year, I was working on a story about a new education initiative. It was gonna be big. It was gonna change things. I spent 36 hours on it. 36 hours. And then, at 11:30pm the night before it was gonna run, some politician tweeted something stupid. And just like that, my story was old news.
I was furious. I mean, I get it. News is news. But this was important. This was gonna make a difference. And now, nobody was gonna read it. Because some politician couldn't keep his mouth shut for five minutes.
But Here's the Real Kicker
We're all complicit. I'm as guilty as anyone. Because at the end of the day, we all gotta pay the bills. And if that means writing about the latest celebrity feud instead of the important stuff, well, that's just how it goes.
But I'm not gonna lie. It sucks. It sucks alot. Because I got into this business to make a difference. To inform people. To hold the powerful accountable. And now? Now I'm just another cog in the machine.
But hey, that's life, right?
And Speaking of Machines
Look, I'm not gonna sit here and pretend I know everything about AI. I don't. But I do know this: it's changing our industry. And not necessarily for the better. I mean, have you seen some of the stuff that's being published these days? It's like nobody's even reading it. It's just words on a page. And honestly, it's completley depressing.
But here's the thing. We can't fight progress. We can't. So we gotta adapt. We gotta find a way to make this work. For all of us.
And maybe, just maybe, we can find a way to make it better. To make it more than just clicks and engagement. To make it about the news again.
I don't know. Maybe I'm just dreaming. But I gotta believe there's a better way. A way that's fairer, more honest, more committed to the truth. Because that's what we're supposed to be about. That's what journalism is supposed to be.
But hey, what do I know? I'm just a girl from Austin who's been in this game too long.
Oh, and One More Thing
If you're really serious about staying informed, you gotta go beyond the headlines. You gotta dig deep. And sometimes, that means looking at sources you might not agree with. Something to challenge your assumptions and make you think.
